Hey all!
Since last time quite a few things have happened. A little over a week ago we played a game against the Red Mountain Lions. Now because Westwood is the only IB-school in Mesa, I have friends from all over the place. Some of my friends live near Red Mountain High School, which is at least a good 20-30 minutes away from where I live. So you'd think they could show up for the game, right? No one of them did. That just proves what type of friends they are! (If they're reading this, they'll know I'm just kidding. I hope.)
Anyhow, the game didn't go so well. So maybe my Westwood friends were wise enough to stay home. We lost by a final score of 35-7. The bus ride home was scarily quiet.
Coming home from school the next day, Friday, I got quite a surprise. Someone had dumped about 4-5 m³ of manure (gødning) outside of the gate to our backyard. Asking my host mum about this, I found out that I would be helping with spreading that stuff around our front- and backyard. I had been looking forward to that weekend including Monday, Labor Day, which is an American holiday. Good thing the mormons consider Sunday a holy sabbath day=No work. That day of break in between days with all the yardwork sure did me good! There were a few occasional breaks on Saturday spent watching the opening day of college football. I guess you can say my hostfamily likes to put the Labor into Labor Day. Took us the greater part of a day and a half to get all done.
And as if that wasn't enough, when I didn't work outside shoveling manure, I was inside working on a pretty big English assignment. Labor Day indeed. Getting the day off from school was useful though. It meant that I had time for skyping with my parents, whom I hadn't talked to since my birthday on August 16th, except for a few e-mails. So it was quite neat to talk to them, I must say. Another nice part of Labor Day was that it spared me from having to get up at 5.30 for morning workouts in the school's weight room.
Last week gave us a chance to redeem ourselves, going up to Scottsdale (30+ minute drive) to play the Desert Mountain Wolves. Their varsity (1st team) is ranked the 9th best high school team in Arizona, so I had no idea what to expect of their junior varsity team. We did bounce back from our loss to Red Mountain with a 42-20 win. I got loads of playing time which I was very pleased about, much more than our first two games combined.
Now up untill this point I had thought that all bus travel with the football team would be done in complete silence, we are not allowed to really talk on the bus or bring cell phones or iPods. Well, I found out that is not the case after a win. We were quite loud on our way home, talking from one end of the bus to the other and singing along to whatever song was on the radio (Which included Lady GaGa. Never thought I'd see a bus full of football players sing along to the lyrics of Bad Romance).
We celebrated so loudly the bus driver had to pull over to the roadside to tell us to calm down.
Yesterday, Saturday, I was invited to and attended a movie party at one of my friends. This was another event arranged for the exchange students at Westwood. As I have mentioned before, the great part of these events is that they are arranged by other IB students, which are my great friends and classmates, so it's another opportunity to hang out with them. We watched the comedy "Dodgeball" and had lots of fun, hanging out under the beautiful night sky. Which wasn't beautiful all night, if you asked me. Ask any Arizonan and they'd tell you they loved it. A thunderstorm had to pass by bringing in some rain. Coming from an usually-way-too-rainy Denmark, I don't think I can ever cherish the rain as much as people here do. Maybe in some time.
I'll leave you with an explanation of why I only spent 2 hours in church today. No, I didn't skip anything. Today was a stake conference. A stake is an area of churches. I thought this would be very much different from regular church meetings on Sundays. Turned out that wasn't actually the case. In essence, todays stake conference was a longer sacrament meeting broadcasted from another building to our church. But without the bread and water! It was okay though, despite not being as special as I had imagined. I don't mind getting an hour extra of sleep.
On that note, it is now time for me to go to sleep (Nice transition huh?). Tomorrow isn't Labor Day, so I have to get up at 5.30 for morning workouts. Good thing that's not all week, but only on Wednesdays too.
Yours truly,
Thomas.
